There have been numerous students that have discontinued courses or have discontinued matriculation or have changed majors. Some of these people do it to get what they "need" so they can progress. There have been multiple people in society that have benefitted from this. These people provide a fresh look on the discipline and this results in innovation. These people are not bound to the stipulations of the discipline and this then becomes the basis for their production. The problem with these people is law. They often get into deviance and oftentimes it results in infarctions and violations.
In post- secondary schooling students have the ability to register for courses based on their program requirements. These students are always concerned with the completion of their program so they can graduate. Usually in university when the student registers for a course, they have several weeks to be able to determine if they are going to continue with that course. If they discontinue that course, then the course is not going to appear on their transcript as a dropped course. If they however decide to remain in that course, they must then attend class per the schedule. Universities enforce a two step system for courses that students want to discontinue. At Kwantlen Polytechnic University, “dropping” a course means that that specific course is not going to show up on the student record while “withdrawing” means that a “W” is to appear on the student record (2023). What this means is that students relative to their perspective on their education, can get valuable knowledge of other courses in other disciplines which can serve their profession well. This process of discontinuing courses is a process that is continued from secondary schooling. For example, if a student in secondary school aims to be a Doctor of Medicine, he or she is required to take Science courses. The student would then register for Biology, Physics and Chemistry. Intensive however, if the student has difficulties with completing these courses he or she can simply drop or withdraw from a course. Say, withdrawing from Chemistry. Learning involves absorbing information and utilizing critical thinking to make meaning of the subject matter. This means that at any stage after the start of the course, the student is being taught and information is being conveyed in class. With that said, students that have dropped or withdrawn from a course still learned some subject matters within the syllabus of the course. The theory of utility in Sociology says that a functional use exists for human experience. With that said, these students have seen the syllabus, read the course descriptions and have possibly completed some assignments and exams before dropping or withdrawing from the program. The difference between dropping and withdrawing simply is the student record, the transcript. If “W” appears on the transcript, this means that the student attempted the course however, it also means that the student can be casually versed in its subject matter. If the student is casually versed in this content, it could result in experience based scenarios at places like work which would result in expertise. Programs usually have a list of courses that are credited when students take these courses. This means that some of the other courses could be interrelated to the subject matter of the dropped or withdrawn course. When one course is dropped or withdrawn, and the student graduates and takes courses per the program major requirements, the other courses fill in the gaps of the dropped or withdrawn courses. Yes, the student wont be technically versed in that course but however, they would know enough of that course on the basis that the other courses provided subject matter contents within that course. For example, Criminology, Sociology, Law and Political Science are Social Sciences and Arts. They are interrelated. Subject matters tried by these all in common are the concepts of, Deterrence- Criminology, Social inequities- Sociology, Rule of Law- Law and Democracy- Political Science. These Majors also have a component in Science and Research. Take Political Science- a quantitative component is required for graduation. This means that the student must enroll in numbers related courses like Biology, Geography, Chemistry, Physics amongst others. With that said, the discipline of Political Science itself, has concepts related to these disciplines which extend the scope of the discipline. In Political Ideologies- Political Science discerns various concepts such as “primordialism” (Biology and Psychology), “climate change” (Geography), “environment and Ecology” (Chemistry) and “consensus and democracy” (Physics). Political Science also takes from other disciplines such as Economics and Business just like the other disciplines mentioned. This means having a “W” on a transcript can serve as an access point to other disciplines because the application of learned concepts and its analysis can have interrelated subject matters which would result in experience and if worked on could end with expertise. With the above mentioned, there have been multiple people in the domestic environment that have dropped courses or whole programs and have succeeded. What is common between all these individuals is that they took what they needed from the courses and or programs they matriculated into. Below are examples and explanations of actual individuals that have engaged themselves with concern of the above.
Elizabeth Holmes is a female entrepreneur that hoped to change the Medical industry by providing biomedical equipment designed to use minimal amounts of bodily fluid to test for disease. She dropped out of Stanford and created her own company with her boyfriend. The company was Theranos. This company amassed billions in value as she sought to innovate. This ended in shambles. Mark Zuckerbaerg is a male entrepreneur that studied in Harvard. He dropped out of the program he matriculated into once he discovered what he wanted to do in Business. He was approached by another student to make a website for Harvard students, a social media website. Mark decided to take this idea and create “the Facebook.” This resulted in a lawsuit. Bill Gates is a male entrepreneur that started designing software for computers. Bill Gates is a drop out of Harvard. He discovered that he would make software for computers. This resulted in a lawsuit because the computer chip manufacturer was tied to the software indefinitely. Steve Jobs is a male entrepreneur that dropped out of College to create Apple computers. This resulted in a lawsuit with Xerox because the technology used was similar. There is a common theme here. These individuals all dropped out of school, they are known as “visionaries,” and they all caused lawsuits. What is interesting to note with concern of the theory herein is that these above mentioned individuals served their industries because they provided a “fresh” look at things or a different perspective. And with that they ascertained success.
