SCHOLAR: THEORY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMUNICATION

Social justice communication with consideration of academic experience and education means that under the legal processes of which involves legal communication, social justice communication falls under it, because it initiates social movements under social mobilization which then helps the process of legal analysis, legal research and legal planning.  Hence legal communication has a branch and it branches to social mobilization to social movements and social justice communication than communication and finally socialization – refer to the image below.

In the image above, green is a starting point.  It is the point that indicates education and experience.  If the person does not possess education they are relegated to socialization as it pertains to this process.  Socialization results in communication.  When communicating, the individuals have an option to partake in social justice communication- indicated in yellow.  Red stands for an objective or goal.  The goal of social justice communication is to create a social movement so that effective change to the domestic environment can occur.  Next to its right is social mobilization which then is a goal of social movements.  Social mobilization requires technical knowledge in order to be successful.  In this image, legal communication is a goal of social mobilization which starts from education.

Social justice communication is a form of rhetoric.  Rhetoric is about written or spoken persuasion.  It is used in the public sphere where individuals gather and reason over societies problems.  Pressing public concerns are transformed via rhetoric because speakers use strategies to persuade and evidently cause an effective change.  When in consideration of rhetoric, it is important to note the following:  ethos, pathos, logos and persona (King 2020).  Ethos means that the speakers credibility comes into question.  Is the speaker truthful?  Is he or she competent?  What is their status?  Are they likeable?  And are they objective?  These are some questions that must be asked with regards to speakers and ethos.  Pathos on the other hand means the ability for the speaker to appeal to emotions.  This is widely used in social justice and many approaches have been used to incite a response.  More often than not though people end up getting triggered.  Logos questions the argument, is rational and there is supporting evidence?  To test for logos the are three items of note, the claim itself, the grounds and the warrant.  The claim is the position the speakers takes, while the grounds are the proof and the warrant is the connection between the claim and grounds (King 2020).  With all the above noted, it becomes increasingly clear that social justice communication is merely a style.  Rhetoric style matters because it helps with appealability so that the speaker can affect democracy.  An example of a style is Donald Trump.  His style is aggressive as he has previously used in his rhetoric ad hominem attacks, hyperboles, reification ad baculum attacks and paralipsis.  These have also been used in social justice communication.  Trump is a persona and that was what was conveyed to the USA during his term as honorary President.

Social justice communication also involves psychological theory and the implementation considerations of strategy and tactics of negotiating used in business.  Social justice entrepreneurs come in many shapes and sizes and they all advocate for a better society.  The most recent social justice entrepreneurs are publicized on social media platforms and more often than not, they are independent.  There are several of these social justice entrepreneurs to note here and they have different and varying approaches to communication.  Zarna Joshi comes from Seattle.  Big Red comes from Ontario, Trigglypuff hails from Massachusetts and Jody Sinead from the UK. Zarna Joshi uses speculation in order to make her arguments.  Big Red uses borderline harassment to argue.  Trigglypuff has employed pathos to get recognition via appealing to people emotions.  And Jody Sinead has used persona to depict herself.  As for the males however, there is Ben Shapiro who is from Los Angeles, Bearing is from Australia and Andy Warski from Ontario.  Ben Shapiro is an expert and he has used ethos in his arguments as he backs his claims with grounds and warrants.  Bearing chooses to use persona by being neutral and partisan as much as possible.  Lastly, Andy Warski used ethos to transition from social justice to other forms of communication.  All of the above strategies for social justice are part of rhetoric.

Social justice communication is a practice of linguistic prows and technique.  Social justice entrepreneurs like Greta Thunberg and Joshua Wong are always quarrelling with law enforcement because social justice requires so much emotional charge and passion.  Some can think of social justice as a sport or even a form of entertainment.   These social justice entrepreneurs communicate the way they do as to garner intrigue.  In the study of Political Science, intrigue is high priority.  This is because the very root of that discipline involves, the query of authority and power.  It has been widely known that in communication within the field of social justice it can become aggressive and argumentative.  It becomes aggressive because people tend to passionately support a specific cause.  It becomes argumentative because people defend that cause.  The communication in social justice could be considered harassment or abuse to some however, it is a fact that those communicating with social justice in mind, that the cause on either side is to benefit society.

The process of law is the following legal analysis, legal research, legal planning and legal communications (Zariski 2014).  With regards to communication within the field of Law, there are several observations that have to be discussed.  There is a difference in the legislation between the Canadians and the USA.  The Canadians have limitations on freedom of speech although the Constitution has provisions which permit “freedom of expression” and these are under S2 which states people have the right to ““freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication” (Laws Louis 2023).  The USA on the other hand has the first amendment which states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press;” (Library of Congress 2023).  Formal legal communication requires that the speaker be aware of the legislations within his or her country.  Legal communication is bland and politically correct rhetoric because democracy shapes public speech resulting from popular sovereignty and democratic inclusiveness.

With social justice communication and legal communication briefed, it is necessary to explore the foundations of communication.   Potter and Perry says that communication is the following process, Pre- Interaction Phase, Introductory phase, Working Phase, Termination Phase (2006).  In the Pre-Interaction Phase people research and study the other person they are going to be communicating with.  In the introductory Phase, individuals come together for the first time.  They greet one another and usually partake in small talk as they exchange their names.  The Working Phase, however is the phase where most of the communication takes place.  This is the phase where a working relationship can be established.  In this people communicate with intent and they negotiate what party has to do what etc.  amongst other things.  Lastly, the Termination Phase is when individuals bid each other good bye to end the relationship.  Social justice communication can occur within any part of the communication process.  Communication involves a sender and a receiver.  In this the sender and receiver both send messages to one another.  Senders and receivers decode the message (Ross-Kerr 2006).  Communication is a complex subject and many factors and variables are taken into account when attempting to decipher the meaning and symbolism of the interaction.

In the study of Psychology there are biases, preconceived notions and prejudices.  People often mask these in favor of what is publicly practiced as it pertains to the public sphere.  Communication techniques as empathy, humor, hope, clarifying, focusing, silence, confrontation and paraphrasing can all be psychologically used to guide the conversation. Further, the following techniques can also be used, false reassurance, automatic responses, changing the subject, defensive responses, approval or disapproval, passive or aggressive responses and arguing (Ross-Kerr 2006).  These psychological communication techniques are widely used in social justice communication as discussed above.  To sum this all up- socialization helps people get somewhere with communication but it is education that gets the job done.

THEORY OF PEOPLE SEE AND PEOPLE DO- This theory is necessary for the theory above.  This theory posits that individuals observe and in their observation, a social learning process occurs.  The person attempts to critique the activity and they critically think about it.  When the thought process about the activity has been reasoned, the person then acts on it.
